How OSS Began

Ocean State Sensing grew from two different perspectives on the same problem: the ocean is dynamic, but the information used to understand it is often sparse, delayed, or incomplete.

One founder brought decades of undersea engineering experience at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, along with graduate education in ocean engineering and business. He had seen opportunities to improve maritime sensing that were difficult to pursue within existing systems.

The other brought more than two decades of maritime operations experience, including time in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force, supported by degrees in environmental engineering and engineering management. He had seen firsthand how outdated or incomplete environmental data could complicate real-world decisions when ocean conditions differed from what was expected.

Together, they shared a passion for the ocean and a belief that better decisions begin with better understanding. Temperatures shift. Water masses move. Fronts and thermoclines form, disappear, and relocate. Models and historical averages are valuable, but they cannot always show what is happening in the water now.

That conviction led to the founding of Ocean State Sensing in May 2021.

Since then, OSS has focused on making ocean sensing more persistent, practical, and useful. Along the way, we are building a multidisciplinary team of maritime professionals, engineers, scientists, meteorologists, and operators who understand both the technology and the environments where it has to work.

Together, that team is focused on revealing the changes conventional observations can miss and turning them into information that we can act on.

A healthier and more sustainable relationship with the ocean begins with understanding it as it is, not simply as we expect it to be.

Built Differently

Operator-Led

Built from real experience working at sea.

Integration-Focused

Designed to work aboard vessels, buoys, docks, and autonomous platforms.

Science-Grounded

Measurement, calibration, and analysis remain central.

Mission-Driven

Better information for defense, research, weather, fisheries, and environmental stewardship.

Built for What Comes Next

OSS has grown by putting resources where they matter most: engineering, fieldwork, and learning from real deployments. That disciplined approach has allowed us to move quickly, stay close to operators, and build technology around real ocean needs. It also gives us a strong foundation for the next stage; scaling the platform with customers, collaborators, and strategic partners who share the vision.
